Compact Holiday Home with Uncommon Interiors- VilLA NM

We just received some photos from UNStudio showcasing this uncommon holiday home from Upstate New York. VilLA NM is a compact building, especially designed for weekend and vacation getaways with family and friends. The architects described it as a “futuristic hut” that has unobstructed panoramic views over the surrounding landscape and large floor to ceiling windows that establish a great connection with the exterior. Here is more information: “The kitchen and dining area on the ground floor are connected by a ramp to the living space above, the 1.5-meter (5 feet) height change allowing for a sweeping outlook over the surrounding woodland and meadows. A similar ramp connects the living area to the master and the children’s bedrooms on the second floor.

Facilities such as the bathroom, kitchen and fireplace are clustered in the vertical axis of the house, leaving the outer walls free. Large glazed windows feature in all but the most private rooms.Technically, the volumetric transition is generated by a set of five parallel walls that rotate along a horizontal axis from vertical to horizontal. The walls become floor and vice versa. The ruled surface maintaining this transition is repeated five times in the building. Standardizing and pre-fabricating of this structural element lowered the building costs without reducing the spatial quality of the interior.”

The Dream House You Cannot Own!

This could give the Iron Man’s house a run for its money. Approximately 40 miles north of Auckland, New Zealand is the perfect perch for a proposed dream house. Though only an architectural visualization at this point, this is the kind of house you would normally expect a Bond movie villain to own!
Mahina, Maori for moon, designed by Weber Consulting was originally slated to be placed on the relatively uninhabited Kawau Island. However the island’s residents are torn over whether or not to allow it to be built. The controversy has led to international interest, and according to the New Zealand Herald News, the official website for the Mahina says that the moon-shaped house can be built anywhere on the planet.

The website literature states, “A predominantly modern residence with a ‘Bondesque’ suggestion of times past; the glamorous age of martinis and tuxedos.”

“Dispel the misconception that white is starck (sic) or austere. Here it is lavish, sumptuous, opulent.”

The house is 827 square feet and is set to have a plant room, deck, swimming pool and “thermal mass” to regulate internal temperatures.

Luxury Reinvented : Micheli Residence in Florence

Here is a home full of light, color and life. The Micheli Residence comes from Italian architect Simone Micheli and was built for the artist’s family. Located in a beautiful part of Florence, you are looking at a home which does not involve only a fabulous design. The architect meant to transform a regular living space into one that would reflect the creator’s architectural focus: “Ethical Luxury”. Here is more information on the concept from Simone Micheli: “ …the new luxury does not mean immobility or habit, but rather freedom and movement. It is a light and stirring thought, at any moment we are able to choose where and how to live and to reinvent the environment we live in. As for architecture the new luxury is related to the idea of regaining the beauties and the truth of our daily life together with our inner feelings”.

Alligator House : Affordable Abode in New Orleans

The spectacular “Alligator House” comes from buildingstudio, a team with an impressive portfolio from LA. Its design really stands out, as the facade resembles the shape of an alligator head. The place was built in order to help some of the Katrina refugees. Here is a specialized description from the architects: “This 13-ft. wide home is based on a common typology in the New Orleans area: the “Single”, meaning a one-family shotgun residence designed to fit the long narrow lots typical in the City. Metal grate steps stretch across the front of the house for casual sitting while visiting with neighbors.
